The Bioinformatics Core Facility for Proteomics
The Bioinformatics Core Facility for Proteomics is an entity of the Proteome Informatics Group. Its mission is to provide the
best available technology in bioinformatics for proteomics to contribute to the research programs of scientists at the Faculties of Medicine
and Sciences from the University of Geneva, in the whole Switzerland or abroad. In doing this, the Bioinformatics Facility for Proteomics
provides a cost-effective means for investigators to have access to sophisticated data analysis via the latest software. Assistance, training
and access to cutting-edge equipment and software are essential leitmotivs in the operation of the Bioinformatics Facility for Proteomics,
which are implemented through:
The Bioinformatics Core Facility for Proteomics and the Proteomics Core Facility of the University of Geneva work in close collaboration to provide complementary services to the proteomics community.

The team
- Help desk - we supply skilled personnel to aid in the analysis and interpretation of proteomics data such as electrophoresis and mass spectral data;
- Programming - we develop and program tailored tools and databases to help the proteomics analyses;
- Training - we teach fundamental and practical aspects of bioinformatics for proteomics to interested users to leverage the more efficient use of software and research objectives;
- Latest technologies - we provide up-to-date software and computers to the research community.
The Bioinformatics Core Facility for Proteomics provides the following services:
- Comparative analysis of populations of 2-DE gel images and the discovery of differentially expressed proteins;
- Identification and characterization of proteins using mass spectrometry data and validation of the obtained results;
- Data standardisation according to MIAPE rules or for submission to World-2DPAGE and PRIDE databases.
- In depth proteomics data analysis including detailed characterisation based on data mining techniques;
- Access to data analysis platforms, software applications and databases developed by the PIG or skilled by PIG members, as well as to open source and commercial tools, such as Phenyx, Mascot, X!Tandem, InSPecT, Popitam, MSight, Melanie;
- Development of customized analysis tools (scripts and programs);
- Design and implementation of databases and web applications (e.g., MySQL database and web-based client/server interfaces);
- Database development for publishing 2-DE gel images on the Internet/Intranet;
- Support for investigators for solving problems concerning data acquisition, management, analysis and storage;
- Comprehensive training program covering the principles of bioinformatics for proteomics as well as the practical aspects of software, tools and database usability and data analysis.
